After This It’s Door-To-Door
If you live in, or in the general vicinity of, the city of Northfield, you may very well already have had enough of me. Last month, I did two in-person events as well as a radio interview. Area print and online media have also placed my face before the unsuspecting public. But, like the one-eyed movie villain who has only been shot once, I am not done yet.
Here’s the schedule during a working holiday weekend:
• On Friday, I will be the guest on the ArtZany! radio show, a weekly program on KYMN-1080 hosted by arts supporter and writing instructor Paula Granquist. The show begins at 9:05 a.m. Sorry, no online feed.
• Later in the day, I will go back to school. Northfield High School English teacher Bubba Sullivan has invited me to speak two of his literature classes about Charles Bender, the writing process and journalism. These appearances are not open to the public. I appreciate the chance all the same.
• On Saturday, I will peddle signed copies from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or maybe a little later) at the St. Olaf Bookstore in Buntrock Commons. This event, which will include a roster of other authors, is part of the college’s annual Celebration Weekend. As a graduate of St. Olaf College, this is a great opportunity for me. Thanks to Ruth Block, the store’s trade book expert, for the invite. Thanks to David Gonnerman, media relations maven, for his piece about the book.
If you’re in the area, please stop by. I’d be happy to personalize a copy for your father or grandfather — or anyone else for that matter.

"Chief Bender's Burden" has won the 2009 Seymour Medal, which recognizes the best work of baseball history during the preceding calendar year. Thanks awards committee, Dorothy Seymour Mills, the Society for American Baseball Research, and readers!
