MBA Honors Book

I am a big supporter of independent bookstores — and I would be even if there wasn’t a spine with my name on it in many of them. Indies are good for local economies. They are good for the environment. They are good for small presses. And, amen, they are good for mid-list authors. That’s why a distinction bestowed upon my book means so much — because of its source: The Midwest Booksellers Association has made “Chief Bender’s Burden” a Midwest Suggestions pick. Midwest Suggestions are books recommended by booksellers that have a regional appeal, either because the author is from the Midwest or the story takes place there. Thank you, MBA. Thank you, booksellers.

    Mr. Swift:

Congratulations on the listing. You’re right about indpendent bookstores. I miss the old Odegaard’s on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, the Baxter Books in downtown Minneapolis, the one that used to be in St. Anthony Main (Mr. Micauber’s was it?) and of course the one on Grand Ave by Macalester. I’m glad Northfield still has River City Books.

Thank you! Books may cost a buck or two more at indies and mom-pop shops, but if we don’t support them they will go the way of the triceratops — and we’ll all be the poorer. … By the way, please call me Tom.

I’d tell you what I call him, Mr. Haas, but then I may never taste peanut butter again.
