Book Bonanza
A Borders in St. Louis exploded and the debris landed in one of the area’s many glorified garage sales. I was tipped off over the weekend but when I stopped by on Monday afternoon I was still astonished: several large shelves of books — including current bestsellers, classics, and big-name author backlist — at 80 percent off retail. 80! Most copies are in new or like-new condition and remainder mark free. The only downside is that you have to work for it. The shelves are chaos. You might see Philip Roth next to Philip Dick and, man, that’s not right. The largest obstacle is that there is no semblance of order. Spine out, spine up, spine down — most shelves look like the books fell in buckets from the sky. But it never occurred to me to complain. I kept poking around until I reached sensory overload. Then I went back the next day and did pretty much the same thing. I must be stopped. Someone. Please!
